Ingredients

Just a few ingredients are needed for this apple juice mocktail – most of which you probably have on hand! See the recipe card below for the full ingredients and amounts.

  • Apple cider or apple juice – You can also use apple juice if you can’t find good quality apple cider. I recommend apple cider that is fresh from a local farm, grocery stores will often carry between September through November refrigerated in the fruit aisle.
  • Ginger – Fresh ginger is recommended. If substituting dried, it can change the flavor of the recipe.
  • Turmeric – Dried turmeric is fine for this recipe. Black pepper is needed to aid with the absorption of the curcumin in turmeric.
  • Cinnamon – Use your favorite kind of cinnamon here. I think Ceylon changes the flavor too much for me, but know some people enjoy it!
  • Ginger beer or ginger ale – See my suggestions for the best healthy ginger beers. You can also substitute sparkling water here as well.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Turmeric – If you’re sensitive to turmeric, just leave it out of this mixture.
  • Cinnamon – Replace warm cinnamon with a pinch of nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice or cardamom.
  • Lemon – Add a squeeze of lemon for brightness and acidity.
  • Cider – Use apple juice instead.
  • Zero proof spirits – Add a splash of non-alcoholic rum substitute or zero-proof whiskey.
  • Sparkling water – Use this instead of ginger beer, for a low sugar mocktail.

Pouring the apple juice mixture into a fine mesh strainer into a larger glass.

Step 3: Use a fine mesh strainer to pour the apple cider blend into a larger cup or bowl, straining out the pulp from the ginger. Set the strained apple cider mix aside.

Pouring ginger ale into a glass with spiced apple juice and ice.

Step 4: Add ice to a glass or make this in a coupe glass without ice by using a cocktail shaker. Pour in about 1/2-3/4 of the apple mixture. Then add the sparkling water or ginger beer to top off and stir to combine.

Expert Tips and Tricks

To make this for a party or large group, double or triple the base recipe and place the apple cider mixture into a large pitcher. Serve with bottles or cans of ginger beer, ginger ale, and sparkling water so everyone can build their own beverage.

Serving Ideas for Apple Mocktails

Garnish – For a fun garnish, add sliced apples, cinnamon sticks, star anise, or ginger slices/candied ginger. You can also put cinnamon sugar around the rim of a glass to serve!

Thanksgiving or holiday parties – Pair this with dutch oven pork roast, air fryer stuffed pork chops, or cast iron roast chicken and Boursin mashed potatoes for a Thanksgiving dinner.

Recipe FAQ

What’s the difference between apple juice and apple cider?

Apple cider usually is made from freshly pressed apples. It’s unfiltered and because it’s made with fewer preservatives, often has a shorter shelf life and less sugar. Apple cider is not the same thing as hard cider – which contains alcohol.

What else can I use apple cider for?

Apple cider is great for cooking! Try it in these baked donut holes, apple cider pork chops, or even in a pot roast without wine.

Can I make ahead?

Yes! The best way to do this is to make the apple cider base ahead of time, blend and strain, then store in a mason jar till you’re ready to combine with the ginger ale, ginger beer, or sparkling water. You can also freeze the base into ice cubes and add to ginger beer that way.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 ounce fresh peeled ginger root, 2-3 inch knob
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • A few grinds of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 can non-alcoholic ginger beer or ginger ale, can also use sparkling water

Instructions

  • Blend all ingredients in a high-powered blender, on high, for 20 seconds. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a glass jar or measuring cup, using a spoon to push the juice through the strainer to remove the pulp. Discard the pulp.
  • Add about 1/4-1/3 of a cup of the juice to a glass with ice or a coupe glass. Top off with sparkling water, non-alcoholic ginger beer, or ginger ale. Garnish with cinnamon sticks or sliced ginger.

Notes

  • Apple cider ice cubes – Freeze the juice in an ice cube tray and/or store any remaining juice in a glass bottle or mason jar in your fridge for up to 5 days. Then top with ginger beer or ginger ale for a flavored drink!
  • Turmeric can be omitted from the recipe, if desired. If you do this, you also don’t need to add the fresh pepper.
  • I recommend Topo Chico for the most carbonation for sparkling water, and Fever Tree or Regatta light for ginger beer.

  1. Melinda Chan-Sze says:

Hello! If i’ve already made the ginger juice – how do I make this apple cider mocktail?

    Thank you!

    1. Alicia says:

Hey! Blend everything without the ginger, then add in the ginger juice to your taste. If you’re mixing into a mocktail I’d do 1/4 cup of apple juice and start with 2-3 teaspoons of the ginger juice, then add more from there.

  2. Norma MacIntyre says:

I thoroughly enjoy your recipes – which I use at least once a day. I’m excited to try this recipe on the weekend. Have you ever heated the apple cider mix before serving this mocktail?

    1. Alicia says:

I haven’t yet because it’s been 90 degrees plus here this year haha! But I bet it would be pretty good. Try it and let me know!
