Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Delicious - Sometimes all the citrus in these can leave you with a sour face, but this one is actually delicious for sipping and also makes a great mocktail.
- Easy - No juicer needed for these - just a good blender.
- Pain-relieving - Ginger and cinnamon are both shown to be effective at reducing migraine pain and frequency. And curcumin in turmeric can reduce inflammation and CGRP.
- Inexpensive - Most ginger turmeric shots at grocery stores will cost you $3-4 per shot, but these will cost you around that to make 6-8 shots!
Turmeric and ginger are nutritional powerhouses and often recommended in supplement form, but here you can get them in one easy anti-inflammatory drink.
Equipment Needed
- Fine mesh strainer
- Wellness shot glasses (I prefer the wider mouth ones for easy pouring).
You could also use a large mason jar if you'd like to store these in bulk.
Ingredients
Just a few basic ingredients are needed to make this recipe - many you probably have on hand! For amounts, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Apples or apple juice - To get the most health benefits out of this, I recommend using honeycrisp or a sweeter apple. You could also use a local, less-processed apple juice or cider if you can find that.
- Ginger root - Fresh ginger root is best here because of it's sweeter and more complex flavor. Ground ginger cannot be subbed 1:1 here because it would be a lot more intense.
- Cinnamon - Look for a good quality ground cinnamon - I recommend Whole Foods 365 Organic, Morton & Basset, or Simply Organic.
- Turmeric - The active ingredient in turmeric that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties is curcumin. I recommend the same brands as cinnamon!
- Black pepper - Boosts the absorption of curcumin in turmeric.
You'll also need filtered water if using an apple, or you could also substitute coconut water for an electrolyte boost.
How to Make Ginger Turmeric Shots
Step 1: Add the ingredients to a blender
Combine the apple and water or apple juice, peeled ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and black pepper.
Step 2: Blend till combined
Blend everything till fully combined - about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Step 3: Strain the ginger turmeric juice
Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the pulp from the apple and ginger, leaving you with a smooth juice.
Recipe Tip - Peel the ginger root with the back of a spoon to take off the skin without wasting a lot of the ginger!
Variations
- Citrus - Apple juice can be substituted for orange juice, but omit the cinnamon if you do.
- Coconut water - Blend coconut water with a fresh apple for a boost of electrolytes.
- Warm - Serve warm or cold, just don't microwave them for long. Heat on low to retain the health benefits.
- Sweetness - This drink is sweet enough using apple juice, but honey can be added if needed.

Storage Recommendations
These ginger turmeric shots store well in a large glass container or individual shot glasses. They will keep in the fridge for 7-10 days.
Be sure to shake the juice well before drinking as some of the spices may start to settle to the bottom after a couple of days.
You could also freeze them in individual ice cubes and defrost as needed or use them as flavored ice cubes for drinks.
Serving Suggestions
- Wellness shots - Sip these turmeric shots on your own for breakfast or to aid with natural pain relief.
- Mocktails - Mix with ginger ale or sparkling water for a spiced apple cider mocktail.
- Flavored ice cubes - Freeze into individual ice cubes and serve with sparkling water poured over for parties or a refreshing drink.

Ginger Turmeric Shots
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cup apple juice or apple cider*
- 1 ounce fresh peeled ginger root a 2-3 inch knob
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- A few grinds of freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients in a high-powered blender, on high, for 20 seconds. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a glass jar or measuring cup, using a spoon to push the juice through the strainer to remove the pulp. Discard the pulp.
- Serve juice in shot glasses or top with sparkling water or ginger ale for a fun mocktail!
- You can also freeze the juice in an ice cube tray and/or store any remaining juice in a glass bottle or mason jar in your fridge for up to 5 days.
Notes
- *Instead of apple juice, you can use 1 apple (core removed and chopped) + 1 cup filtered water!
- If using juice, use a good-quality juice or cider without any additives or sugar. I recommend a local brand so you know it's fresh if you can find it!
- Substituting ground ginger will give a different flavor and be a lot more spicy. Highly recommend fresh.
- Easily peel the ginger with the back of your spoon!
- Ginger and turmeric in high quantities can interfere with some medications. If you intend to consume large amounts.

I gave this a shot today since I was starting to feel a migraine coming on, and it really helped! I did need to take a bit of my migraine medication, but I didn't have to lie down with an ice pack this time.
