Why You’ll Love This Recipe

While I have so many great homemade electrolyte drink recipes like natures gatorade, I’m always getting asked for a version without coconut water. This is where homemade watermelon juice is so amazing!

  • Easy – This recipe is made in 5 minutes in a blender – no juicer needed!
  • A natural electrolyte drink – Watermelon is over 90% water, making it excellent for hydration. It contains electrolytes like potassium and magnesium.
  • Antioxidants – Watermelon is also a great source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to reduced inflammation. This fruit also contains vitamin C.
  • Anti-Inflammatory – Mint contains natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Ingredients

Here are some tips on what to look for when buying ingredients. For full amounts, please see the recipe card below.

  • Watermelon – If you want to save time, buy pre-cut watermelon. If you want to save money, go with cutting your own. Look for watermelons that have a yellow patch/spot on the side, lines down the sides that look like webbing, and that feel very heavy. This means they’re very juicy and full of flavor!
  • Fresh mint – Mint is incredibly easy to grow in a garden and it’s perfect for many recipes like this blueberry mojito mocktail or ginger drink. You can also locate it in small plastic packages in the refrigerated produce section.
  • Mineral salt Redmond’s is what I use in my electrolyte drinks. This not only perfect for balancing the sweetness with the watermelon, but also contains trace minerals like iron, potassium, and zinc.

Optional add ins that are also delicious are lime juice and honey!

Variations

Watermelon mocktail with mint and salt around the rim of the glass.
  • Watermelon slushie – Freeze watermelon into pieces before adding to the blender. Add a 1-3 tablespoons of coconut water to the blender or food processor to get it moving.
  • Watermelon mint ice cubes – Use sphere ice cube molds and a small funnel to pour the watermelon and mint juice into the molds. Top with sparkling water, coconut water or homemade ginger ale!
  • Watermelon mocktail– Make this a mock-a-rita! Add lime juice and top your glass with rubbing a lime around the rim and then dipping into salt. Fill with ice and watermelon juice.
  • Heal Your Headache diet – Omit the lime juice. Instead try a splash of pomegranate juice for a little bit of tart flavor!
  • Low salt – Omit any added salt.

How to Make Watermelon Juice

Watermelon and fresh mint combined in a blender.

Step 1: Add watermelon, mint, salt, honey and lime juice (if using) to a blender. No extra liquid needed!

Blending watermelon and mint in a blender till smooth.

Step 2: Blend till fully combined – about 20 seconds on high. Watermelon should be completely pureed.

Pouring the watermelon mint juice through a strainer into a larger glass.

Step 3: Pour the watermelon juice through a fine mesh strainer to remove any larger bits.

Pouring the watermelon juice into a short glass with ice to serve.

Step 4: Add the juice to a glass and garnish with mint, if desired. If making this into a non-alcoholic drink, add a little bit of salt to the rim to transform it into a fun mocktail.

Storage Information

This watermelon mint drink will store in the fridge for up to 4 days. Some separation may occur, so shake well before using. Store in an airtight glass jar or in individual bottles to grab and go for a refreshing drink.

Freezer recommendations – Freeze this juice into popsicle molds for the most amazing watermelon popsicles (also great when you don’t feel well!). Or make watermelon mint ice cubes by pouring the juice into sphere ice cube molds, then top with sparkling water, coconut water or homemade ginger ale!

Watermelon storage – If you can’t finish it, cut the watermelon and lay out the pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Freeze until the pieces are solid and then transfer to a bag. This helps the pieces not get stuck together when freezing. Use these for smoothies, flavored ice cubes, or blend into a watermelon sorbet.

Serving Suggestions

Watermelon was one of my favorite fruits when I was pregnant because it helped so much with nausea and hydration. There are so many ways to use it besides this watermelon juice, or mocktail variations.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups watermelon, chopped
  • 1/8 teaspoon Redmond’s Real Salt, plus more for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon honey
  • Optional: juice of 1 lime

Instructions

  • To a blender, add the watermelon, salt, mint, honey, and lime juice (if using). Blend on high for about 20 seconds until the watermelon is completely pureed.
  • Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve into your prepared glasses. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
  • For a mocktail – Prepare your glasses: Run a piece of watermelon around the rims of two glasses. Pour about 2 teaspoons of salt onto a plate and place each glass upside down onto the salt, twisting the glass until the rim is coated. Fill each glass with ice.

Notes

  • Watermelon mint ice cubes – Use sphere ice cube molds and a small funnel to pour the watermelon and mint juice into the molds. Top with sparkling water, coconut water or homemade ginger ale!
  • Frozen watermelon mint slush – Freeze watermelon into pieces before adding to the blender. This is best done on a sheet pan so the pieces don’t stick together. Add a 1-3 tablespoons of coconut water to the blender or food processor to get it moving. Blend till smooth.
  • Watermelon mocktail – Add lime juice and top your glass with rubbing a lime around the rim and then dipping into salt. Fill with ice and watermelon juice. Or top off with ginger ale or sparkling water.
  • HYH diet / low histamine – Substitute lime juice with pomegranate juice (about 2 tablespoons). Low salt – omit the added salt.
