This ginger drink is refreshing easy to make in just 5 minutes. The flavors of ginger and mint combine with natural electrolytes, making this drink perfect to restore hydration.
With this recipe you can skip the packaged sports drink! It’s packed with electrolytes like potassium and magnesium from coconut water, making it perfect for post-workout recovery or refreshing on a hot day. And the flavors of ginger and mint are especially helpful if you are nauseous.
This ginger drink is a great compliment to my homemade electrolyte drink, non-alcoholic sangria or electrolyte popsicles!

Why This Recipe Is The Best
As someone who has had their fair share of migraine attacks, I know how beneficial ginger can be as an anti-inflammatory food. From my ginger smoothie and homemade ginger juice, I’m always incorporating it into recipes.
You’ll love this recipe because it’s:
- Easy – Ready in just 5 minutes and all you need is a blender.
- Refreshing – A great mocktail, this ginger drink is perfect for summer – similar to a non-alcoholic mojito.
- Hydrating – Coconut water is a great natural electrolyte.
- Anti-inflammatory – Ginger is often used for pain relief and nausea relief. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory food.
Ingredients
Below are just a few notes on the main ingredients. Please see the full recipe card below for amounts.
- Ginger – For this drink it’s necessary to use fresh ginger for the best taste.
- Mint – It’s also important to use fresh mint leaves instead of dried.
- Coconut water – I’ve used Trader Joe’s, Zico and Harmless Harvest. Harmless Harvest sometimes has a more pink color, which is cute with the green if you’re serving this ginger drink for a party.
- Mineral salt – Used for added electrolytes, I recommend Redmond’s (15% off with DIZZYCOOK).
- Ginger ale – I recommend my homemade ginger ale recipe or one of the best ginger beers. You can also use sparkling water. Topo chico is my favorite for mocktails because of how carbonated it is.
Substitutions & Variations
This recipe is already dairy free and gluten free, and is great for a Mediterranean diet.
- For a stronger ginger flavor – add ginger ale instead of topping with sparkling water!
- HYH migraine diet – citrus isn’t permitted in elimination. You can just omit it from this drink or use a splash of pomegranate juice which will work with the other flavors.
- Low sodium – Leave out the added salt. It’s purely for added electrolytes.
How to Make A Ginger Drink
Step 1: Combine all the ingredients in a blender except the ginger ale or sparkling water.
Step 2: Blend till fully combined. Taste and adjust for sweetness, adding more ginger or mint if desired.
Step 3: Strain through a fine mesh strainer, if desired.
Step 4: Pour the juice into a glass with ice, and top with sparkling water, if desired. Add more mint leaves or slices of ginger, if desired.
Recipe Tip
While you don’t have to strain out the ginger and mint, it will help with a smoother texture in your drink while still maintaining the flavor. If you don’t want to strain it, I recommend peeling the fresh ginger using the side of a spoon before adding it to the blender.
Storage Information
This ginger drink mixture will store well in the fridge for up to 1 week. The ginger and mint may become stronger as it is stored. You can offset any strong flavors by adding more sparkling water when serving.
This also freezes extremely well and makes awesome electrolyte popsicles.
Serving Suggestions
I’m usually making this drink to help with nausea or a migraine attack, so I recommend it with an easy meal like this air fryer cheese quesadilla.
If you’re serving this for a refreshing summer drink, pair it with this dry rub for ribs (the best ribs!) and a fingerling potato salad or grilled bok choy.

Refreshing Ginger Drink
Ingredients
- 3 cups unflavored coconut water
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
- 6 large mint leaves
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
- 1/8 teaspoon Redmond's real salt, or other mineral salt
- 1 lime, juiced (optional)
- 2-4 ounces ginger ale (or sparkling water)
Instructions
- Place the coconut water, grated fresh ginger, mint leaves, honey or maple syrup, mineral salt, and lime (if using) in a high-speed blender and blend for about 1 minute until the mint and ginger is all mixed through.
- Pour through a fine mesh strainer to strain out any larger pieces (you may not need to do this with a good blender!) and pour that mixture over ice, filling the glass about 3/4 full. Garnish with mint leaves and top off with ginger ale or sparkling water.
Notes
- Ginger ale recommendations are my homemade ginger ale or fever tree. Sparkling water, like Topo Chico, can also be used to top off the drink!
- Mineral salt is added for electrolytes – you can leave it out if you don’t want those!
- HYH migraine diet – Substitute lime with a splash of pomegranate juice for the tart flavor. Top off with sparkling water or homemade ginger ale.
- Ginger juice will keep in the fridge for up to one week, but the ginger and mint will become stronger with time. Use more ginger ale or sparkling water to even out the flavors.
- Calorie calculation is with ginger ale.
